Kid-friendly hip-hop recommendations

Good bets in general:

  • De La Soul
  • Biz Markie
  • Eric B and Rakim
  • DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince
  • Everything before 1985 (Sugarhill Gang, Spoonie G, Treacherous 3, Grandmaster Flash, Fab Five Freddy)
  • Current pop radio hits aimed at pre-teens are usually fine for little kids too, ie Willow Smith, Black Eyed Peas etc, though these may get on your nerves
  • Instrumentals — I especially recommend J Dilla and 9th Wonder

Here are all the hip-hop tracks in my collection that I can certify to be kid-friendly, profanity-free, and most importantly, good music! (I made the executive decision that kids can handle some minimal exposure to “hell” and “damn.”)

  1. Totally appreciate what your doing here as ive been on my own exact mission. i can list a few tunes i have so far found if you like, but the main thing i wanted to say is that the bad language etc.. all depends on the individual parent what some think is ok others may not and the some of the tunes you have selected are most certainly not profanity free and in some cases they are quite bad. not that what your doing isnt a good thing its great but alot of them i had all ready considered before striking them from my list. even groups such as de la soul, das efx, and early old school hip hop are riddled with words like shit, smoking weed, and talk of prostitution.
like i say its a great thing what your doing and ive used some of your examples which i hadnt considered so thats a big plus for me and there are many of your suggestions which fit my criteria.
anyway i couldnt live without prisoners of war by organized konfusion which doesnt have swearing in it hows that for a bonus. also there are many special ed tracks also free of bad language try some of those..

    cheers and thanks

  2. That’s an interesting executive decision, but I wouldn’t want my kids repeating words that I would consider vulgar (especially since they don’t usually understand how to use them properly and in what situations they shouldn’t use them in.). KEEP BLOGGIN’ BRO!
