The drum break at 3:36 is one of those hip-hop workhorses, like &#8220;<a href=\"..\/2010\/impeach-the-president\">Impeach The President<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"..\/2009\/the-natural-history-of-the-funky-drummer-break\">The Funky Drummer<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"..\/2010\/apache\">Apache<\/a>.&#8221; It seems like it&#8217;s always been there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1XNr06zoKYg?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div><\/p>\n<p>The Soul Searchers were led by guitarist <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chuck_Brown\">Chuck Brown<\/a>, known in Washington DC music circles as &#8220;The Godfather of <a title=\"Go-go\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Go-go\">Go-go<\/a>.&#8221; Go-go is a regional flavor of\u00a0 funk using a heavy <a href=\"https:\/\/ethanhein.com\/wp\/2011\/swing\/\">swing<\/a> feel and a lot of happening syncopation in the kick drum pattern. Early in my funk connoisseurship, I would have used the go-go beat as the definition of funk. The beat in &#8220;Ashley&#8217;s Roachclip&#8221; isn&#8217;t actually very typical of go-go since it uses straight eighth notes. You can hear a more typical one on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.windmeupchuck.com\/\">Chuck Brown&#8217;s official web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The first time I listened to the &#8220;Ashley&#8217;s Roachclip&#8221; break I immediately thought of <a href=\"https:\/\/ethanhein.com\/wp\/2010\/eric-b-and-rakim\">Eric B and Rakim<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/E7t8eoA_1jQ&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>Nice &amp; Smooth use the break in &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Vfpp4OQO7d8\">Down The Line<\/a>&#8221; &#8211; they mix it with the intro from Charlie Parker and Miles Davis&#8217; version of &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ShLzrUM1cGs\">A Night In Tunisia<\/a>.&#8221; Hot!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/Vfpp4OQO7d8&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p>PM Dawn takes the break in a very different direction by mixing it with &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UYb83KM4at4\">True<\/a>&#8221; by Spandau Ballet for &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0AOVf9p9ht4\">Set Adrift on Memory Bliss<\/a>.&#8221; Don&#8217;t you feel like PM Dawn is due for a comeback?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object width=\"480\" height=\"385\" classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/0AOVf9p9ht4&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The break has attained wide familiarity outside of hip-hop in EMF&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=waacof2saZw\">Unbelievable<\/a>,&#8221; where it&#8217;s probably surprised to find itself combined with samples of Andrew Dice Clay.
