We were on our way to Grand Central, on the first leg of our trip north for Thanksgiving. A girl sitting near us on the 4 train had her headphones cranked to where I could recognize the beat as the one from “A Milli”<\/a> by Lil Wayne.<\/a> I could also make out that there was a female vocalist singing on top. It sounded pretty cool. I put it out to Twitter to see if anyone knew what it was. Rafi Kam<\/a> hipped me to Joya Bravo’s<\/a> freestyle in the back of a dollar van. It’s not the one I was looking for but it’s much better, you do not want to miss it.<\/p>\n

Cursory googling turned up a freestyle by Lil Mama, she of “Lip Gloss”<\/a> fame. Also not what I was after but still cool.<\/p>\n

Then I was busy with family and travel and am only now getting back to the search. Bangladesh, one of the producers of the “A Milli” beat, lists some of his favorite remixes and freestyles<\/a>. Nice little sidebar but no solution.<\/p>\n

The answer turned out to be Beyonce’s “Diva.” It’s not Beyonce’s best work but the production is happening.<\/p>\n

The vocal sample “A Milli” is named for comes from “I Left My Wallet in El Segundo (Vampire Mix),” a Tribe Called Quest<\/a> remix by Fatboy Slim. Hear the original sample compared to how it appears in “A Milli”:<\/p>\n

The Tribe Called Quest song has a bunch of samples in it, of Average White Band and Minnie Riperton and Grover Washington Jr and the Steve Miller Band. That makes “A Milli” a remix of a remix of a remix. Each subsequent remix deepens the layers of recursion<\/a>.<\/p>\n
