We were looking for contemporary songs that use <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borrowed_chord\">modal interchange<\/a>, combinations of different scales to create complex blends of emotion. For the course, Marty picked &#8220;Pink And White,&#8221; a simple tune with a deceptively complex harmonic structure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uzS3WG6__G4?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The track begins with a brief burst of anxious strings, and then the song goes straight into a four bar loop that repeats for its entire duration. The rhythm is a relaxed 6\/8, a strangely old-fashioned groove, more evocative of the sixties than the present. The production evokes the late eighties, with doubled vocals, simple piano and drums, and big reverb. The soundscape reminds me of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/P.M._Dawn\">PM Dawn<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like his fellow genius oddballs Bj\u00f6rk and David Byrne, Frank&#8217;s lyrics are introspective and elliptical streams of consciousness that mostly don&#8217;t rhyme.\u00a0He\u00a0sings in a\u00a0detached and wistful voice, which is overdubbed\u00a0dreamily. At the end of the song, he&#8217;s joined by angelic layers of Beyonc\u00e9.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how about the chords? They repeat identically for the entire song:<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">||: Cmaj7 | Bm7 | Amaj7 | <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amaj7 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:||<\/span><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The progression has a strong Paul McCartney flavor, reminiscent of \u201cYou Never Give Me Your Money.\u201d What\u2019s the mood here, aside from the general ambient dreaminess we get from the lyrics and production? Where does this harmony come from and what does it make us feel?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no single scale that produces all of these chords. However, there are some different scales that produce similar chord progressions. Let\u2019s try them out for clues. To get the progressions, play the chord starting on the third scale degree, then the second, then the first. originally heard this as the correct scale for the last chord, because the piano melody implies A\u00a0Mixolydian by using a G\u00a0natural in the melody. However, Marty pointed out that the guitar is playing an unambiguous\u00a0A\u00a0major seventh chord. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mixolydian has some more dissonance and bite to it than straight major because of the tritone between the third and flat seventh. The C#m7b5 is intriguingly close to the real first chord &#8211; just take the C-sharp down a half step\u00a0and you get Cmaj7.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You could think of the actual \u201cPink and White\u201d progression as combining chords from all four\u00a0modes: natural minor, Dorian, major, and Mixolydian. It therefore evokes aspects of all four\u00a0moods: somber and formal, hip deadpan, mellow relaxation, and bluesy groove.
