My sister loves it. She says it's like a hip-hop Moulin
Rouge, that it's uneven but the musical sequences are
crazily wonderful. She also reports that most of the audience
in the theater with her didn't enjoy it at all, and that several
people walked out. This was in a primarily black part of Minneapolis/St
Paul, and my white friends report similarly mixed feelings.
I'm not in such a hurry to see this movie, because the thing
is that the accompanying album of the same name is so wonderful
I can't believe it. I cannot get enough of it, and I'm enjoying
supplying my own visuals. Some highlights:
Mighty O
Quotes Cab Calloway! The
jazz world continues to maintain a snobbish ignorance of
hip-hop, but hip-hop continues to take a growing interest
in jazz.
Hollywood Divorce (ft Snoop Dogg and L'il Wayne)
Simultaneously tells the story of a troubled
marriage, a troubled working creative partnership, and the
entire history of America's appropriation of black culture.
Mutron Angel
Producers, and musicians generally, check out
this drum loop - a quiet reversed snare on beat three and
literally nothing else. If you want a big hint as to where
music is headed in the next ten years, this is it.
N2U (ft Khujo Goodie)
Dig the sampled coughing in the intro, from
"a little too much inspiration, damn." What a
bassline this tune has, it's like Bootsy Collins. Songwriters,
check out the two bar pause at the end of each verse, before
the chorus kicks in.
