Black holes
are thought to be the cause of monstrously long sprays of charged
particles issuing from 'north' and 'south' poles of certain galaxies.
These 'extragalactic jets' are powered by the extreme heat
generated by the material falling into the black hole (the 'accretion
disk') rubbing against itself.
