The guidebook recommends that the first thing you do in Kyoto
is go on the Philosopher's Walk, dotted with ancient Buddhist
and Shinto temples. It's the part of town that
inspired Shigeru Miyamoto to design The Legend Of Zelda.
While we were visiting Honen-in, one the more ancient-feeling
holy sites, we came unexpectedly upon a show of contemporary
art by Paramodel,
a hip young woman who (I think) we met. I'm embarassed to
say that I have no idea what the story is on this style of
traditional-looking weaving, but I do know that Paramodel
does it using Ethernet cables. She also had some crazy pieces
involving bright blue plastic railroad tracks running in and
out of one of the tea ceremony buildings.
